Known as Operation Market Garden, the 82nd Airborne Division was called on to set up bridgeheads to the Rhine River by series of airborne assault. The 325th GIR was set to land behind enemy lines on September 19th, but weather problems delayed their takeoff until September 24, when the 2nd Battalion landed along the Maas-Wall Canal, blocking the Heuman bridge.
From September 27 to September 30, the 325th was in constant heavy fighting in the forest of Kiekberg. While they did manage to clear the forest of German forces, they still had to retreat, and on October 2nd, the fog that had been obscuring their getaway lifted, causing them to be surrounded by German forces, digging in until reinforcements would arrive. Sadly, Yarbrough did not live to see the reinforcements, and died on October 3rd, 1944. |
